Writing a Persuasive Essay Using Rhetoric
Writing a Persuasive Essay Using RhetoricAn important part of writing a persuasive essay is the rhetorical appeal or better known as the rhetorical question. This is a question that poses a question to the reader about an issue or concern and is designed to get their attention.By making a rhetorical appeal, the writer is drawing the reader's attention to their piece and is inviting them to read further. The appeal will usually begin with the question or thesis statement. The sentence is intended to address the reader directly, for example 'My thesis is...', 'My argument is...', or 'My title is...'.After the rhetorical appeal, the writer will include a sub-clause. This can either be a closing sentence or an introductory statement or conclusion. After the opening and closing sentences are used to convince the reader that their attention is being drawn to the next part of the essay, the sub-clause will make the reader think that they have been 'debated' by the author and will then end w ith a catch-all statement.Rhetorical appeals are crucial for a successful essay. Without them, the writer may find that their message is lost among the many other essays, which were written in different ways, but none had the rhetorical appeal to draw the reader's attention. As an example, say you are writing a sample essay on the same topic you found in your introduction, about one of your school classes. Now all you have to do is to complete that essay, and insert your rhetorical appeal in the opening paragraph. That's all you need to do!It can also be placed in the middle of the paragraph. Just be sure not to use too much filler in the paragraph, as this will make the paragraph feel more awkward and might even make it less convincing. Just remember that the essay needs to grab the reader's attention and let them know you are addressing them.If you are doing a sample essay on your own topic, you may want to do some research about the subject. It would be better if you could actuall y ask the author yourself or read what they said about their own topic. A sample essay on your own topic will also give you the opportunity to see how people write about their own topic, as well as the problems that arise with the grammar and style when writing.
